I know, I know, the title of this post poses a trick question. Don’t fall for it!
Federal fair housing laws are in place to protect consumers from REALTORS® “steering” them to one neighborhood or another based on protected classes. You know from your pre-licensing class you cannot tell your clients which schools you “consider” to be the best option for them because it could be considered “steering” and a violation of the fair housing laws.
This week Trulia released a national list of school district rankings to help home buyers decide where they’d like to live. The blog post is titled, “School districts people flock to – and flee from.”
Each district is assigned a ratio based on the number of families with children moving into a district versus the number moving out. A ratio below 1.0 means more parents are leaving the schools than are moving in, while ratios above 1.0 show that more parents are trying to get their children into specific schools. You can get Trulia’s entire list sorted by state here.
Since most of my readers are in Kansas, I have downloaded the list for Kansas and sorted the school districts by County, then by Trulia’s highest ranking schools. You can download it by clicking the PDF icon to the right.
Just a reminder, when buyers ask questions about schools, you should give them information about each school and encourage them to schedule a visit, but you aren’t allowed to give your opinion about the quality of the schools. You can now include this list from Trulia with your school website links and educational report cards so they can make their own determinations on which school is best!
